The Best Vocalist Ever ‘Gerry Garcia’

I just had to pass this information on to everybody! While browsing the internet the other day I came across a site that really impressed me.

The site belonged to an entertainer by the name of ‘Gerry Garcia‘. Now Gerry live’s in the north east of England and he is an entertainer working around the pubs and clubs of the North East. I have seen his name advertised several times but I have never had the chance to go and see him perform live, but I have heard a lot about his vocal ability. So when I came across his web site and saw that he had a CD for download priced at only £3.95.  I couldn’t resist clicking on the buy now button and downloading his album just to see if everything that I heard about him was true.

WOW! what an incredible voice this guy has, Gerry Garcia has one of the best singing voices that I have ever heard. His album has 16 tracks on it, with a wide variety of songs to please everyone.  He also promises to include some free downloadable tracks exclusively for the people that buy his Winding Road album.

Go check him now, it’ll be the best £3.95 that you could spend.   Gerry Garcia

After I had purchased his Album, I contacted Gerry and he agreed to include a link to my web site on his page as well.

Can’t be bad!

Learn to play guitar – The Major Scale

If you have a desire to learn to play guitar, you will need to have an understanding of the Scales, let’s take a quick look at the major scale first. We all know the sequence of notes in the scale as: Doh – Ray – Me – Far – So – La – Tee – Doh.

There are seven notes in the scale without the octave, and if we transpose this into the notes of the E Major scale we would have:  E – Gb – Ab – A – B – Db – Eb – E

The last E in the scale is the same note as the first E, but only one octave higher in pitch. Which is the same as; playing the open E string then playing the same string with your finger on the 12th fret. The two notes are 12 frets apart or one octave.

On the guitar neck the distance between each fret is known as a Half step or Semitone and the distance between 2 frets is known as a whole step or tone, so if we played an open E note on the 1st string then played an F fretted on the same 1st string 1st fret, the distance between those two notes would be 1 fret, a half step or a semitone. To keep
things simple, for the remainder of this book we’ll use the term: half step / whole step, when referring to the distance between
notes.

Again if we played open E on the 1st string then moved up 2 frets to play the Gb on the same string, and pressed down on the 2nd fret, the distance between those two notes would be a whole Step.

As with the notes on the guitar it would depend on the key that we were playing in whether we call a note flat (b) or sharp (#) but for the purpose of this short lesson we will keep it simple and call the space’s in between the notes half steps and  whole
step’s. Likewise with the notes, we will refer to the notes as being flat rather than sharp. Also the notes in the scale are marked with Roman Numerals, this is the standard for numbering notes in a
scale. You will also notice the upper and lower cases in the Roman Numerals; this will all become clear when we start with the chord progression scales.

So the E Major scale looks like this:

E Major Scale

As you can see in the diagram above, in the major scale each note in the scale is separated by a W which represent a whole step or a H, representing a half step.

I should mention before we go any further. The major scale is taken from the 12 note Chromatic scale, which is used as a reference in music throughout the western world. The 12 notes in the chromatic scale are
each separated by only Half steps or by only one fret on the guitar fret board.

Guitar Fretboard

Above is a diagram of the guitar fret board, you will notice that the notes are exactly the same on each of the E strings (1st and 6th strings) as they ascend up the fret board.

Try to memorize the notes of the E string! There are no  flats (b) or sharps (#) between E and F or between B and C. Take a look at your guitar, most guitars have dots or inlays positioned at the 3rd, 5th,
7th, 9th and 12th frets.

Memorize the notes at these positions first and then simply fill in gaps. For instance; if you knew that A is played on the E string 5th fret and you were trying to find a Bb, then you would just move up the fret board a
half step to the 6th fret, and you’ve got a Bb. Simple isn’t it!

It will help by saying the notes out loud as you play each note at its fretted position, for now play the notes on the top E string (thinnest string) one at a time starting with the open E and moving along the fret board to the 12th fret. The correct position to place your fingers on the frets are just behind the wire frets, not on top of them. Make
sure that the notes are ringing clear as you play them.

Which Guitar Should I Buy?

There is a wide range of guitars to choose from when buying your first guitar. There are certain considerations that you should take into account before you purchase an instrument.

What is your ultimate aim? Do you only want to play acoustic guitar? Or do you eventually see yourself playing in a Rock Band maybe? Whatever it may be, the majority of people start playing an acoustic guitar first. The reason for this is: they are relatively cheap to start with; they can be bought in ¾ size versions, for the student with smaller hands (although you can get electric guitars in ¾ sizes also). You don’t need an amplifier for an acoustic guitar, which means, less noise to annoy people with.

Acoustic guitars, as I said earlier are relatively cheap, compared with buying an electric guitar and amplifier, but don’t buy a guitar on cost alone, some of the cheaper ones are really not worth bothering with. Try to take someone that knows about guitars with you for advice, try the guitar, and make sure that you feel comfortable with the feel and weight of the guitar.

Buy a guitar with a good action; most good guitar shops will set up a guitar to suit every individual. The action of the guitar is the distance that the strings are from the fret board. The greater the distance, means that the worse the action. A guitar with good action will enable you to press the strings down more easily, (because they are closer to the fret board) making it a lot easier to play guitar chords, especially barre chords.

For the students that prefer to start learning using an electric guitar, well there is nothing wrong with that! In fact! The strings on an electric guitar are generally lighter in gauge which makes them slightly easier to press down or bend, (bending means to increase the pitch of the note by stretching the guitar string).

Whichever guitarthat you decide to buy, the most important thing is, that you make sure that you have researched that particular make and model on the internet and know what you want to purchase before walking into a music store.

You may even consider buying a used guitar, from eBay for example. In this case, you really need to take advice from someone with knowledge of guitars.

Once you have found the guitar you are looking for, the most important thing to remember is to seek out some good quality guitar instruction. There is a couple of ways you can go with this:

1. Find a guitar instructor that will be patient with you, especially in the beginning when every thing is completely new to you. Make sure that they are qualified to be able to teach you. Please bear in mind that one to one mentoring as with a guitar instructor can work out very expensive.

2. If you know someone that is willing to show you a few guitar chords, scales and guitar licks, then you are onto a winner, this way is the cheapest way to learn, but you are limited by the other persons ability.

3. There are a lot of guitar course’s on the internet, some of them are very good and some promise that every thing is included in there course or ebook. Some are delivered via CD/DVD these tend to be more expensive. There are online course’s where you need to log into a web site to view lessons, with this type of course you will need to have an internet connection available every time you wish to take a guitar lesson. In my opinion the best course to go for are the guitar course which can be downloaded onto your own PC and then every thing run from there. With the better course’s you will be offered a trial period for free to help you decide. Which ever course you go for, it is important to get good quality content with plenty of video and colour diagrams, with a systematic approach to the guitar lessons.

Find out if the course you are interested in will give you a good foundation in music theory to get you started, are there guitar tabs supplied? guitar chord charts, chord progressions, guitar scales? All these questions should be answered before you commit yourself.

Good luck in your search for the right guitar and teaching method.

Learn to Play Guitar for Free

There is an easy way to play guitar chords, all you need to do is start at the beginning. That might sound a little patronizing, but that’s not my intention. Most people learning to play guitar, try to move on too fast, they need to stick with the basic open chords until they have a thorough understanding of the basic’s, before  moving on to more difficult chord progressions, Once you have a good understanding of the open chords and can change from chord to chord with ease, the rest will come quite quick and easy.

Probably the moment that every budding guitar player waits for is being competent enough to play the songs from their favorite artistes, Well that time will come soon enough, but like any thing thats worth while in life, it will take a lot of hard work and comitment to get there.

I am currently producing a guitar course for the beginner at the moment that will take you from being a total novice to an intermediate player in approximatley 3 month’s, and that estimate of 3 months will depend on each individual, the amount of hours practice etc, but on average any student that is committed to learning to playing the guitar will have a good understanding and knowledge in that time. I have structured the lessons and exercise’s in a way that the student will get the best and quickest benefits from.

The course is based around an instructional ebook with plenty of graphics and example audio files that will guide the student through the complete course in an easy to follow clear manner.

But Wait! ……this is the best bit!…… I am offering this Guitar Course FREE to the first 50 subscribers to my site http://www.playguitarlicks.com all that I ask for in return is for each subscriber to send me a quick email letting me know how you found the course.

Please act quickly and subscribe to my site now to avoid being disapointed. By the way, included with the course will be a lot of free stuff, so get on over now to http://www.playguitarlicks.com the first release is planned around the end of June 2009.

7 Reasons for Learning to Master the Guitar

Sure you can be the life of the party or someone who is really adored by music lovers or, the list goes on. You can play really good music through the strumming of your guitar. And people would scream out “Encore!” That would be really nice isn’t it? Do you like the idea? Well, read very carefully as this article states some of the most exciting and fulfilling advantages when you have learned to master the techniques and chords in the phase of guitar music.

1

Playing a guitar enhances your brain to work and to initiate such signals that commands your hands on mentally memorizing where to put your finger on a particular fret, pressing on the right chord and engaging in the proper manner of strumming.

2

The pleasure of gratification is satisfied. Thus, your self-esteem is working its way through your personality. A book once said, a psychological book to be exact, that men has to satisfy basic needs to be able to advance to his self to the highest level which is the self-actualization. Something like that.

3

Let’s face the fact that a guitar is one of the most convenient instruments there is. You can’t bring your drums wherever you go. It would be exhausting on your part to carry a drum set around your campus and constantly beat it. It can cause so much distraction. Whereas if you have been a full pledged guitarist your whole life, you could play music where you can.

4

Being able to drag your guitar around town, might as well earn something from it. A talent like that would not go on unnoticed. Playing along the streets of downtown is not really the idea but if you consider it, then yes, you could try. You could ask some of your friends to back you up.

5

You, yourself, is a unique individual. Out of ten people only one becomes a pure musician. And by some luck, that person is a guitarist. Or can be someone with pure musical talent who can play not only the guitar but similar instruments or some percussion ones. Some say it is taught but real talent comes from deep inside. It is that spirit within you that makes you distinct.

6

Nobody can call you a loser with no specific talent. Yes, you could flunk all of your exams and miss every graded recitation during class hours but when school or house parties come, you are the star. Even an A+ won’t top the popularity you can get from being an artist.

7

You are the “it” guy. Everyone can hate you or mess you up. But the moment you have learned to become a master in your own craft, everyone will recognize how good you are. Even those who never or didn’t know you will find an effort to. People will love you for the talent that you are.

More advantages are viewed just by playing the guitar. Playing is one thing but mastering is another. So if you are still struggling to play such tunes, don’t give up that dream. Even though it’s just a hobby or past time, who knows, with such skill, it could take you to new heights. Something brighter. Something more intense. Something close to Hollywood.

Here is an article on vintage guitar that i read on article creative.com site.  It makes for very interesting reading, I just thought that I would share this with you.

Your Guide To Vintage Guitars

By: Richard Saldana

Music is the language of the soul, as the poet says.
Listening to the strums of the strings of the guitar can relieve stress, soothes the mood and relaxes the mind and the body. With every pluck of its string speaks of emotions and the music it brought defines the meaning of the unspeakable.
Guitars are musical instrument that have known to have a long life. Most guitarists have custom made guitars. The older it gets, the beautiful it sounds. Vintage guitars collectors, either electric vintage guitars or acoustic, understand its’ worth and appreciate it audibly.

Historic relevance does make the vintage guitars and the vintage electric guitars a medium of priceless visual art. Age is not the only aspect that is considered when classifying a vintage guitar. A guitar to be considered as vintage should be made between 1920’s and 1970’s. Vintage guitars are original guitars by the manufacturer or a rare special guitar made for specific musician between 1920 and 1970.

These breed of guitars stand in class all their own. Prior to 1920 they were thought to be too primitive. Post 1970 – the guitar manufacturing world changed, it became more about production lines, computer controlled routers and cutters. Anything past 1970 is still not considered antique, and the value is more on the association with the previous (famous) owner.
Here are ways to appraise or classify any vintage guitars:

1.Guitars should have the original finish. Any signs of refinishing take away value.

2.The guitars original condition is also considered, meaning the craftsmanship should be perfect.

3.It should have its original parts, no modification and no repairs made. Check points are of utmost importance and add value to the piece.

4.Check for any signature of maker or manufacturer, look for any unique details like does it have any silver or gold highlighted frets or any precious stones inlay on it.

5.Limited edition guitars are far more valuable than the mass produced guitars.

The pre-World war II flat top Vintage Electric Guitars are the most desired and adorned. Manufacturer such as Gibson, Fender, and Gretsch produced a number of unique electric guitars in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

One of the most popular vintage guitars made by Fred Gretsch Jr was the Gretsch 6120 Chet Atkins. The Chet Atkins made its way on stage in 1954 with its signature engraved signpost on the pickguard.
Leo Fender’s guitars was not only the best brand of guitars that were made in the 50’s, the Stratocaster was also the most popular guitar favored by musicians such as Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton.

The real success of the electric guitar was with the ES-150 Gibson (which stood for Electric Spanish guitar) in the late 1930’s and made popular as part of the Benny Goodman Orchestra. Les Paul, Leo Fender, and Paul Bigsby work together on electric guitars to make a solid body guitar to eliminate unwanted vibrations on the guitar’s top wooden plate. Epiphone Guitars, at the same time experimented with solid wood bodies that resembled a railroad tie with a neck and pick-up.

George Harrison played a Rickenbacker 360 12 string guitar in the early 1960’s to obtain a fully rounded sound during recordings. His guitar may have been one of the total of 36 ever made! Because of the low numbers of this model of guitar (360/12 OS), finding the other one made during that year would make this vintage electric guitar extremely valuable.

The best way to check its value and appraise a fine vintage guitar is to pick it up, handle it, and spend quality time with the instrument. Touch it, strum the strings, the guitar itself will tell you all you need to know. Collecting Vintage Electric Guitars, or collecting any sort of guitar, is a very personal hobby.
